Summary

'I've read all of Steven Dunne's Damon Brook novels and have enjoyed all three, but DEITY is the best (so far!) It's very rare that I find a book that I just can't stop reading , but DEITY was devoured in two sessions, with only the need to sleep getting in the way! I'm really coming to care about DI Brook, his dark past and broken present, troubled relationships and a life teetering on the edge of total collapse. I don't know if it's Steven Dunne's eye for local detail, or understanding of young people that really brings DEITY to life, but I can't walk home over the Derwent without checking in the water for bodies, or wondering which of the Drinkers by the Assembly rooms is working undercover! I'm sure, in time Derby will be as linked to DI Brook as Oxford is to Morse, or Edinburgh to Rebus'

Where does The Unquiet Grave rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

About midway. I like crime stories but this was not particularly well written.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Nothing special either way.

What does Gareth Armstrong bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Well narrated.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film of this book. It would upset Sheltered Housing staff.

Any additional comments?

I listened to this book aged 66 and many of the characters, younger than me were depicted as decrepit old people. Prescriptions are free for over 60s and Sheltered Housing wardens (now scheme managers) are professional managers and caring people .(Take it from me, until recently I was one). Also it was a bit hard to believe that almost everyone had murdered someone! Why is the main character at odds with his boss as in so many crime novels.

it needs a little more fill story on the explosive police characters, so they resolve issues rather than having too many lose threads

I haven't seen many younger persons reviews of this series yet and thought my opinion might help, at first I really struggled with this series, there were a lot of characters and even more twists that confused me no end. However, I can't fault it any longer, I am hooked! With every book I struggle to put it down even more and have even invested in the audio books as I sometimes struggle to concentrate while reading for long periods of time, this I would truly recommend by the way! I find each mystery even more interesting than the last and I like how the stories intertwine a little, I also relate to Brook in an odd way, I can't I am a divorced middle aged man with a grown up daughter, if anything I am quite the opposite but I relate to his social skills and his thought processes, and the way he works through pieces of information to see the bigger picture. Anyway, long story short is I think that they are a great read and I totally recommend them.
