Miles from anywhere, the isolated mansion Darracott Place is presided over by the irascible Lord Darracott.

The recent drowning of his eldest son has done nothing to improve his temper. For now he must send for the unknown offspring of the uncle whom the family are never permitted to mention. Yet none of that beleaguered family are prepared for the arrival of the weaver's brat and heir apparent....

Yet again Georgette Heyer shows the qualities that made her one of the most successful and best-loved romantic novelists of her age, and why her popularity endures to this day.

Critic reviews

"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes.... Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

"Heart-stoppingly gorgeous." (Harriet Evans)

"Georgette Heyer is second to none." (Sunday Times)

Have loved it for years. Enjoyed hearing it read very much. I've owned all the recency novels by Heyer for many years. Am now buying the Audible versions.

Excellent Heyer book.

the good story survived the reading, just about. I'm still glad I listened, but I wish they'd cast better and edit better. at one point this narrator has Hugo call Anthea "lad" and there are other errors and muddles.

Poorly read - wooden, full of errors, just deaf to the language. Characterisations not good.

This story had me enthralled from the beginning and the narrator did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life.
The scene were Claud was pretending to be shot was absolutely hilarious.
thoroughly recommend this book ❤️ deserves 10 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have listened to very many audio books. Some of the narrators have been poor, many have been good, a few have been excellent but none have been anywhere near as good as Thomas Judd’s outstanding narration of this delightful Georgette Heyer novel. I loved every minute of it and I shall listen to it all over again - something I have never done before.

The narration throughout is nothing short of outstanding.
