A few days before the summer solstice, a 92-year-old woman is found burned to death in her home. On the same day, a man's mutilated corpse is discovered, his arms ripped from their sockets, with a tarot card depicting the Fool inserted in his mouth.

When the victim is identified as someone for whom the police have been looking for almost a year, detectives Anderson and Costello find themselves caught up in a case where nothing is as it seems.

Critic reviews

"Masterful writing, vivid characters, and a highly imaginative, terrifying, and byzantine plot." ( Booklist)

This was a very enjoyable read although I struggled to believe it was set on Loch Lomond. The absolute delight was James MacPherson's narration. He usually brings a story to life with his range of voices.

I enjoyed this book, not quite as much as the previous Caro Ramsey Anderson and Costello books but definitely worth listening to.

Good story and narration

I did enjoy listening to this book but it was very easy to lose the plot in places! There are a lot of characters and, unfortunately, even the narrator (although I think he's great on the whole) seemed to get confused himself! During episodes of abundant dialogue it was often difficult to tell who was talking and this led to some confusion on my part. I do enjoy the Anderson & Costello books and I rate James Macpherson very highly as a narrator but I think, on this occasion, it failed in places. It hasn't/wouldn't prevent me seeking out further titles by this author or narrator though.

A bit muddled
