The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land.

When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton's new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately, without telling anyone - not even his girlfriend Rachel, who has only just moved in with him.

Meanwhile, Simon's sister Cat is facing difficult choices at work that will test her dedication to the NHS. But an urgent call about her and Simon's father, Richard, soon presents her with a far greater challenge much closer to home.To complete his special op, Simon must inhabit the mind of the worst kind of criminal. As the op unfolds, Lafferton is dragged into the sort of case every town dreads. And Simon faces the fight of his life.

Steven Pacey is my favourite narrator and Susan Hill's sequence of detective novels my favourite - and they keep getting better. This one deals with even more complicated issues than the previous one, never in a lecturing or annoying way, but perfectly judged. I can't bear the gaps between these novels...

Brilliant, better than ever!

I had a listening fest over the December/early January period and listened to all 8 of the Simon Serralier series. I think this was the best way to listen to these engaging books even if it drove my husband nuts. I really enjoyed these books - both the plots and the family stories that run alongside. Very listenable.

i am reviewing books 1-8 in this series

Keenly observed emotionally but not too realistic as a plot. The Caribbean accent by the narrator was terrible in my opinion. I’ve listened to them all and the characters are strong , I feel invested in them, look forward to the next one.

Not my favourite but still very good

The continuing development of the main characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cath Deerborn, she's a sympathetic character and the only really warm member of her family.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Very much as expected a great reading of the story without too many silly voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The naked child at the very beginning.

Any additional comments?

A very dark book with lots to think about.

grim stuff

What did you like most about The Soul of Discretion?

Takes Simon into new territory. I like it that no one's personal lives are straight forward and rosy - they are all struggling with something

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Soul of Discretion?

Judith turning up with her bags

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me angry - Shelly's husband in particular.
