"Shocking...terrifying." (Entertainment Weekly)

From USA Today and number one Amazon best-selling author Jeremy Bates comes the second book in the all-new World's Scariest Legends series.

In 1954, at the start of the Cold War, the Soviet military offered four political prisoners their freedom if they participated in an experiment requiring them to remain awake for 14 days while under the influence of a powerful stimulant gas. The prisoners ultimately reverted to murder, self-mutilation, and madness.

None survived.

In 2018, Dr. Roy Wallis, an esteemed psychology professor at UC Berkeley, is attempting to recreate the same experiment during the summer break in a soon-to-be demolished building on campus. He and two student assistants share an eight-hour rotational schedule to observe their young Australian test subjects around the clock.

What begins innocently enough, however, morphs into a nightmare beyond description that no one could have imagined - with, perhaps, the exception of Dr. Roy Wallis himself.

has the reader even heard an Australian accent, absolutely appealing narration I didn't get past three pages and had to read it. I want my money back.

awful narration

Based on the Russian Sleep Experiment creepypasta, The Sleep Experiment is an attempt to stretch out a short horror story into a full novel around 8 times longer than the original tale.

The majority of this book seems to be about how attractive the main character is and how much sex he has with lots of gorgeous women fifteen years his junior. The final hour or so is solid enough, although the “twist” at the end feels pretty unearned, and the court case feels horrendously bloated with near essay length legal statements. The less said about some of the racial/national stereotypes, the better.

The performance isn’t all bad, but the accents for some of the international are borderline offensive. General narration is fine, though lacks feeling in most of the intense moments.

A morbidly curious creepypasta fan might get something out of this, but most should avoid.

A poor retelling of The Russian Sleep Experiment

I haven't finished listening to this audiobook yet, I'm about halfway through. So far the story is ok but the narration is absolutely terrible. The narrator, I think, is Irish because there's a point near the beginning where he slips into an Irish accent which sounds natural, unlike the rest of the book. He puts on a bad American accent for the main part of the reading and the character accents are very much worse. The style in which it is read is also not good, although I can't really explain why, it's like it's a bit too upbeat. as though he's reading to a toddler.
If you can get past all that, the story isn't the best, there is some random dialogue just thrown in at points, for example there's a conversation about whether a guy should shave his head and what clothes he should wear... not natural at all. The characters aren't well written in my opinion, they all seem to be based on stereotypes. I'm hoping the remainder of the story is going to be mildly entertaining, I was considering returning it for my credit back but decided to persevere so we'll see.

Very bad narration

The narrator could not perform an Indian, South Korean, Australian, or even an American accent. They were distractingly bad. Story was great though

Ridiculous accents ruined story
