In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

Capturing the lonely, tormented, and courageous career of a man who fights for his crown, his honor, and his own secrets, Diana Gabaldon delivers breathtaking human drama, proving once again that she can bring history to life in a way few novelists ever have.

A good story But let down by atrocious accents are audiobooks not taken serious by their producers

A book I would recommended to anyone who has enjoyed the Outlander series. It fills in some of the gaps, covering events that took place during Jamie's time at Hellwater. It also helps you to understand how Jamie's relationship with Lord John Grey developed.
It makes a good listen in it's own right for those who have not listened or read any Outlander books. So if you have not yet tackled the mammoth task if listening to the first two or three of thosr long books don't be put off.

My only criticism, and hence only a 4star rating for performance, is the voice/Scottish accent of the character Jamie Fraser. For such a big man I found the voice too small and light, and the accent not very good. Having listened to the Outlander books I have been spoilt.

But the story more than makes up for any shortfall in the performance. It tugged at my heart strings, leaving me feeling emotional on Jamie's behalf. His loneliness without Claire is laid bare, helping to explain decisions he will take after Hellwater.

There is wit and humour as well. With the result that I even warm to the Grey brothers giving you an insight into these men featured in later Outlander books.

So take the plunge, the book does not disappoint.

Gripping story

The two main characters voices as provided by the reader are annoying. Especially that the Scotsman’s voice is a feeble attempt nearer to northern Irish than any part of Scotland. It distracts from the story which is good

Great story shame reader can’t do Scottish accent

Really did not like the narrator doing the story from Jamie’s perspective. Mostly because his Scottish accent was more like broad northern Irish! Otherwise a great book and nice to get to know the Lord John character better.

Hated the narrator.

Why does Jamie Frazer speak with an Irish accent? Very jarring? Otherwise a captivating story.
