About this listen

Sex and rock & roll are my top priorities. I mean, let's face it, they're my only priorities.

As frontman of Austin's most popular metal band, I have it all. But when a car accident nearly kills my best friend, I'm rocketed back to memories of that horrible night, all those years ago when I lost my family at the hands of a drunk driver.

That's trauma I'd rather leave buried, so when Nicole, aka Arson Nic, the roller derby dynamo, skates into my bed, I'm more than happy to bury myself in her sweet solace. What I don't expect is to wake up with feelings.

When a once-in-a-lifetime tour opportunity takes me back to the Cherokee reservation where I grew up, I'll have to face the past I buried long ago if I want to take the road home to a future with Nicole.

Book two of the award-winning Lost in Austin series, The Road Home, is an interracial rockstar/roller derby romance that can be listened to as a standalone. It was the 2022 winner of the Readers' Favorite Gold Medal for Romance–Sizzle and a 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist for Multicultural Fiction.

Christina Berry blows me away with another amazing novel, an enthralling and heartwarming rockstar romance like no other, one I could not tear myself away from. This is the second book in her “Love in Austin” series, and I would like to say the series gets better and better, that would not be fair because the first book is just as amazing. Jake was a key character in the first book, close friends to Ari and Greg, and while their story stands on its own, I highly recommend enjoying the series in the order written because characters crossover into each other’s books and not only is seeing them again like seeing an old friend, but knowing their backstories adds more depth. Nicole was a secondary/side character in the first book, aka Arson Nic, a fierce roller derby competitor with an attitude that is just as fierce. Jake rocks it with his band, a band gaining traction on the local scene. Jake and Nicole’s relationship starts off on rocky ground, a hookup with a purpose for her, thinking she was getting back at her ex, but the chemistry between them was so much more than that. It was great watching these two get to know each other and see their relationship morph into something deep and meaningful. Both had battles with their own inner demons and issues: hers with trust issues, his with guilt and self-worth. When Jake gets a call to tour with another band, to fill in for a bandmate taking family leave, he jumps on the opportunity. The tour takes him close to the Cherokee reservation where he grew up, so after many years he finally visits family and faces his past. Both these characters had interesting and heartbreaking backstories, especially Jake’s. Once again Berry created a multi-layered story with complex characters, and her writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are her character growth and development. I loved how she connected the characters and how everything played out, with a perfect balance of drama, angst, witty dialogue, heartwarming moments, profound emotions, and steamy romance. Christina Berry, thank you for another fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fantastic audiobook production and listen performed by Maxine Mitchell and Gabriel Spires, who did an incredible job voicing the characters and delivering a perfect portrayal of each. Both embodied their characters completely, with Mitchell acing it as Nicole, showcasing every aspect of her personality and demeanor, from her angst to her fierceness to her vulnerabilities, before shedding it all and becoming who she truly was inside. Spires did the same as Jake and rocked it in the role, nailing every aspect of his personality and demeanor too, including his battles with his inner demons and his heart of gold. They were fantastic performing the roles of all the side/secondary characters too. Their expressive performance conveys all the characters’ emotions, making you feel every single one. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers, and their enthralling performance rivets you to the story.

I love experiencing new authors and this is my first Christina Berry book! It's is amazing. The second of the Lost in Austin series, I got to meet Jake and Nicole. Jake is a bit lost in his own head. Living the dream as his band is becoming more popular, he should be riding high. One night with Nicole should help him clear things up, but it only makes things a bit more cloudy! The first woman he actually feels something for, she is an independent roller derby queen that is his perfect match. These two have an incredible push pull that repels and brings them back together until the unexpected happens and their lives take a complete turn. Not your typical rock band romance, the depth of this story is felt right to my soul. From Jake's childhood, his friend Greg's problems, Nicole's past and the surprise that brings their feelings to the front, I was completely invested. It's just the right amount of angst and spice. Plus I loved the sprinkle of Cherokee throughout the book. This was a listen I thoroughly enjoyed.

Gabriel Spires and Maxine Mitchell are the story tellers for this and they pulled out all the stops when it comes to emotions. Spires is phenomenal as Jake. He delves into the mind of this character and pulls out all the feels in his portrayal. Mitchell is Nicole, with just enough snark and vulnerability to create a woman with real conflict and emotion. Together they are amazing.
