Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the twentieth century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

Now, years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions, and way of life, were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer’s description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.

Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his six-year quest to dominate the world, only to see Germany go down in flames.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is a vast, richly rewarding experience for anyone who wants to come to grips with the mysterious question of how this menace to civilization ever came into being, much less was sustained for as long as it was. The answer, unfortunately, is that most of Germany, for a whole host of reasons, embraced Nazism and the fanaticism that Hitler engendered.

This is a masterful book, and despite being written in about 1955 it has not dated at all. This guy was actually a reporter who sometimes stayed in the same hotels as Hitler and gives a first hand account of how Adolf looked on certain occasions - how cool is that? On the other hand, it took me a good three months to get through this book, and I am semi-retired. I find history HARD to read, all those people with foreign names, and sometimes I had to replay three or four times to take it in. Still, a masterwork if you want to get an insight on Hitler's life and thinking. I feel I now understand more or less what fascism is (which I did not before).

Well worth it if you've got the time.

A masterpiece of historical writing.
The birth of the most vile ideology ever devised. How were the German’s ever taken in by this. Can they ever escape the legacy of it. Today, the media, politicians etc always refer to the nazis as if they were some mythical race from out of space who took over some unfortunate country in Central Europe. Let’s not gloss it over or try to conceal these were people of one particular country hellbent on evil. Initially a small number of people that grew and grew to a critical mass unchecked.
How they consolidated power is also what is happening today Europe wide, in the schooling of our children, the workplace, how we relax and socialise, the domination and use of the media. Ultimately democracy gets hollowed out and people’s ability to initiate change is lost.

It must have been Harrowing and continuously scary to have lived during these times knowing they may ultimately win. Luckily they did not.

Definitive account. Brilliant.

This book is staggering in both scope and content. Anyone other than a historian of the Second World War will learn a huge amount from this Audiobook. If I were being critical (which I am not inclined to be about this tome), I would mention that the author is clearly from the Allied camp and as such some of his comments are more judgemental than measured. Given the time when the book was written and the authors own experiences this can be easily forgiven. I should also say the narration was clear and delivered with feeling and gusto. A wonderful read which I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend.

A Very Long But Hugely Rewarding Read
