About this listen

Concluding the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the final part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.

The armies of the Dark Lord Sauron are massing as his evil shadow spreads ever wider. Men, Dwarves, Elves and Ents unite forces to do battle agains the Dark. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam struggle further into Mordor in their heroic quest to destroy the One Ring.

The devastating conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic tale of magic and adventure, begun in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, features the definitive audio recording of the complete tale – including Appendix A – all of which is expertly read by Rob Inglis.

Featured article: Aragorn - a Lord of the Rings character guide

From his time as the ranger Strider to his ascension to King of Gondor, this guide has everything you need to know about the hero Aragorn. Perhaps one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn is known by many names: Strider, Elessar, Estel, and finally Aragorn II, heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor. From a shadowy tracker who mysteriously comes to Frodo's aid to an essential member of the Fellowship of the Ring to the long-awaited king who restores harmony and peace to Middle-earth, Aragorn plays many important roles in the fantasy epic. And he has quite an interesting history.

I'll skip the review of the story, we all know it, its a 'Genius at work' moment. However, seeing the trilogy in the cinema, in advance of listening to this epic tale, I think improved the listen. Peter Jackson's characters almost fitted my imagining perfectly and this made listening, aided by a fantastic narration, a breeze. Oh, that there were more of it's kind out there.

Story – 5/5

Whenever I compare an epic fantasy battle, it has to be vs. the Siege of Gondor combined with the battle for the Pelinor Fields. The battles are so well told, that it is easy to follow and full of excitement. Once again, more enjoyable than the films.

What you also get in this book is the Scouring of the Shire, which they had to leave out of the films. Probably my most memorable scene when I was younger and still stands the test of time. It helped show how far the hobbits had developed since heading out for Rivendell which was once again masterfully told by Tolkien.

Definitely the best of all of the trilogy, and you will be left extremely satisfied with the ending (if you are not already aware of it). A well deserved 5/5 starts

Performance – 4/5

Rob Inglis does a very good job with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. He describes a detailed and complex world so well, making it an incredibly easy listen. I did feel that his character voices could have been a little more distinguishable, but his acting of them was done extremely well.

Overall – 4.5/5
