Hiding out in a cave in the Austrian Alps with three others, Monika runs into trouble. Pursued by vengeful forces of the Wehrmacht and the Gestapo, she and her three companions undergo an arduous journey over the mountains to safety in a Catholic monastery outside the town of Hallein, near the German border.

Meanwhile, Sarah is in Berlin, arranging with some of the highest-ranking German generals to assassinate Hitler and end the war. After being denounced by the local block warden, she is pursued through the streets and over the rooftops of Berlin. She will have to use all her skills to escape with her life.

In France, Oliver is again pressed into service by an increasingly desperate German Army, as they try to stem the tide of the invading Allied forces after D-Day. Unaware that he is working for the Americans, Oliver’s new comrades engage the invaders in Caen, the key to winning the battle of Normandy. Oliver will find himself faced with an impossible choice: to save the men around him or to fight for what he sees as the greater good, and help the Allies win.

After being sent to Austria, Sarah will reunite with her beloved cousin Monika on a mysterious new mission. The two women must piece together a deadly puzzle and uncover a startling new weapon that could alter not only the war but also the future of humanity itself.

I listened immediately after finishing the previous book in the series, and found the story flows well into the next chapter of the characters’ lives.

Wray’s narration was spot on and a perfect fit for the tense and urgent tone of the story. The characters were excellently brought to life, each with distinct and realistic voices, and I was anxious to hear what would happen next.

This book grabbed me right from the start and the action didnt stop throughout the book.

I loved both the writing style and the narration. The action scenes were clear and vivid as I listened. The narration steady, and a voice I enjoyed listening to for hours at a time.

This is the first Eoin Dempsey book I have listened to but it definitely wont be the last!

I’ve just finished listening to Gillian Wray’s narration of ‘The Retreat’ by Eoin Dempsey.

Having followed the series and spent several books with these characters already, I really appreciated the consistency of the narration here. Gillian Wray handles the shifting dramatic tension with a steady confidence that makes it very easy to settle back into Dempsey’s world of WWII espionage.

Wray has a clear storytelling style, delivers well-paced narration, and clearly has an innate awareness of the space this story needs to breathe.

I also enjoyed Wray’s character choices, often German characters are voiced in regional British accents; as a Brit listener myself, listening to an English language novel, I think this worked well; I particularly enjoyed her lecherous farmer, even if the OSS agent Sarah Graf didn’t!

There’s also something about this chapter of Monika Ritter’s story that resonates a little differently to a post-pandemic listener: the uncertainty, the confined, constrained lives, and the fear of an infectious disease(!) all feels oh-so familiar, in a way that lingers under the surface of an already thrilling thriller.

A great listen, especially so if you’re already invested in Dempsey’s Monika series.

Gillian Wray delivers a steady, immersive narration that confidently carries Eoin Dempsey’s WWII espionage story.
