About this listen

The second novel in the Queen's Thief series. Forsaken by the gods and left to his own devices, Eugenides, Royal Thief of Eddis, summons all his wit and wiles in an attempt to conquer the rival queen of Attolia.

Revenge...

When Eugenides, the Thief of Eddis, stole Hamiathes' Gift, the queen of Attolia lost more than a mythical relic. She lost face. Everyone knew that Eugenides had outwitted and escaped her. To restore her reputation and reassert her power, the queen of Attolia will go to any length and accept any help that is offered...she will risk her country to execute the perfect revenge.

...but...

Eugenides can steal anything. And he taunts the queen of Attolia, moving through her strongholds seemingly at will. So Attolia waits, secure in the knowledge that the Thief will slip, that he will haunt her palace one too many times.

...at what price?

When Eugenides finds his small mountain country at war with Attolia, he must steal a man, he must steal a queen, he must steal peace. But his greatest triumph—and his greatest loss—comes in capturing something that the queen of Attolia thought she had sacrificed long ago....

I don't know at what stage of production this issue comes in, but it's the second audiobook I've got from audible that needs to be played at 0.9x speed to sound right. it's uncomfortable to listen to until I adjust it, so if you're struggling that could be why.

Great, but another victim of the speed issue

The 1st book was somewhere in between 2 and 3 stars for me, the 2nd one is a solid 3 star book and the ending somehow elevated it to 4 stars for me but ah.. There's still a lot about it that does frustrate me. Good things first: way more interesting characters (and character developments) than in the first installment of the saga. Especially the relationship between our Thief & his queen is a welcome and enjoyable addition. I also feel that the 3rd person narration was needed here, good choice. The whole world feels quite believable to me. I like how the Gods are woven into the realistic story. Narration is solid. Cons..... For most of them I'd need to go too far into spoiler territory. I'm probably not the ideal audience for it - too much political intrigue that doesn't make me feel very invested at all. I am hopeful that maybe the 3rd book will turn even more towards the characters and show me more of their inner worlds. I just need more of that kind of depth in the story, then maybe it can be a 5* listen.

A bit above Meh

Slowing the narration speed to 90% improved the listening experience for me, allowing the narrator's performance to shine. The characters came to life beautifully and the pace of the plot was just right. Have not read any other books in this series yet, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment - the story stood up on its own.

Enthralling listen

A thoroughly satisfying expansion of the world of The Thief; knockout performance from Owen Findley, who is one of VERY VERY FEW male narrators who performs women and girls with empathy and realism, rather than defaulting to some degree of camp pastiche.

Marvellous stuff

The story itself is well-written and intriguing, the reader’s performance only adds on the enjoyment. Each character is vivid and lovable. A masterpiece.
