Rose has news for Celia – she is due to have a baby by Celia's husband, Humphrey. Soon after, the seeds of scandal bear a criminal fruit when a body is discovered in Little Venice along with Rose's handbag. Celia drafts in an old flame, Will, to root out the truth from suspicions of murder and blackmail, as the evidence starts to converge on the patrons and strange goings-on of the seedy The Odd Flamingo.

First published in 1954, this was one of two gritty and atmospheric crime novels written by the accomplished children's author Nina Bawden.

Good book. but sordid (but when was crime ever cozy). Everybody please gather round and bring preassure to bear on British Library to release one book each month in the "classic crime" series, it's too infrequent releases now for us who can't read

Very good after-war mystery, perfect reader

This is an unexpected treat. I am not familiar with this author so didn’t know what to expect but it is a great story and well read.

The piece is set in post-war England and contrasts between east London and the south east more affluent ares. A good mix of characters and realism. Started a tiny bit slowly but then went at a good pace.

Well worth a try.

Darkly excellent
