About this listen

With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War.

Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter, Hương, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that tore not just her beloved country, but her family apart.

Vivid, gripping, and steeped in the language and traditions of Việt Nam, The Mountains Sing brings to life the human costs of this conflict from the point of view of the Vietnamese people themselves, while showing us the true power of kindness and hope. The Mountains Sing is celebrated Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's first novel in English.

Similar to the books about the siciliana family Florio and the Bacardi saga in Cuba. If you lived those you'll absolutely love even more this one.

Cried so much.

Amazing book...

The Mountains Sing, a stunning and heart breaking multi-generational tale of a family's struggle during the land reform, war and political divides Vietnam has endured.
I will be recommending this read to everyone I know. I hope one day this book will be studied in schools so the tragedies will never be forgotten.

Everyone must read this.

This is a wonderful evocative story. It’s beautifully narrated and helps the listener to build a clear picture of the family and it’s history.

This is one of the best books I've listened to for a while, beautifully descriptive, this book really engrossed you in the surroundings and the culture. There are many parts that are horrific, but this is necessary to accurately display the brutality of the time. I consumed the book within 3 days and found I learned so much about the culture and history of Vietnam, aside from just the Vietnamese War. I look forward to reading more by Nguyễn.

An absolute triumph

Occasionally difficult to work out who’s perspective was being narrated when it jumped from one perspective to another. Overall a really great story - heartbreaking and heartwarming
