The full inside story of one of the golden moments of World War II.

On May 24, 1940, Hitler's armies were on the brink of a shattering military victory. Only 10 miles away, 400,000 Allied troops were pinned against the coast of Dunkirk. But just 11 days later, 338,000 men had been successfully evacuated to England. How did it happen? Walter Lord's remarkable account of how "the miracle of Dunkirk" came about is based on hundreds of interviews with survivors of all nations who fought among the sand dunes of northern France.

Unlike some military history, this was not a dry recitation of troop movements. I really enjoyed it.

Really fine job

An excellent factual and fascinating insight into one of the key moments in the 2WW. My grandfather being one of the lucky ones who escaped the clutches of the Germans makes me proud.
Please don’t forget that several thousand troops were not repatriated and endured becoming prisoners of war their sacrifice was

Thought the book was great but pronunciation of place names like Mar-git, Rams-git etc grated every time.

Great story but little research on pronunciation .

A great telling of the story of the Miracle of Dunkirk. Some of the American pronunciation grates a little T first, but well narrated and an easy listen. Well
Worth the time.

A Ripping yet True Yarn

By any measure this is an excellent book.

The story of Dunkirk is well known, but Walter Lord has woven an exquisite narrative around the events of May /June 1940.

Many personal tragedies are covered and it is this attention to detail at such an individual level that gives this account such impact.

Only one thing lets this version down, and that is Jeff Cummings’ inability to give most towns (e.g Boulogne) their proper pronunciation, instead lapsing into an ill-educated vernacular. This comes across as almost disrespectful of those who were caught up in the tumult.

Listening to this has also added another dimension to Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film of Dunkirk. It was fascinating to see Mark Rylance recreate Charles Lightoller’s involvement, as well as watching Kenneth Branagh play Commander “Bolton”.

Take the time to listen to this account. It comes highly recommended!

A superb retelling of an epic event
