About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens pulls back the curtain on a world that has been hidden from us . . . until now.

Montague has devoted his life to managing the wealth of London’s elite, but at a huge cost: a family of his own. Then the enticing Miss Violet Matcham seeks his help, and in the puzzle she presents him, he finds an intriguing new challenge professionally . . . and personally.

Violet, devoted lady-companion to the aging Lady Halstead, turns to Montague to reassure her ladyship that her affairs are in order. But the famous Montague is not at all what she’d expected—this man is compelling, decisive, supportive, and strong—everything Violet needs in a champion, a position to which Montague rapidly lays claim.

But then Lady Halstead is murdered and Violet and Montague, aided by Barnaby Adair, Inspector Stokes, Penelope, and Griselda, race to expose a cunning and cold-blooded killer who stalks closer and closer. Will Montague and Violet learn the shocking truth too late to seize their chance at enduring love?

Firstly, having read reviews on Goodreads, I can only conclude that listening to this performance is far superior to reading the book!

That said, I further conclude that the readers, may not have started this series from the beginning and thought that this novel was an Historical Romance - it is not - the romance is incidental. This entire series revolves around the murder/mystery cases that Barnaby Adair takes on, alongside Inspector Stokes of Scotland Yard. In Victorian England (in the fledgling days of the Metropolitan Police).

Along the way, we see how their friendship works, given their disparate social backgrounds. The women they meet and marry and how the friendships further merge and develop.

This “episode” is a further step towards enlarging their working/familial/social circle, which Violet and Mr Montague slide into.

The Murders/Mysteries are cleverly designed and pull all aspects of the series narrative together. Those of us who began this series at the beginning, are still interested in the Adair’s and the Stokes’ and don’t find their interactions unnecessary to the story. Additionally, there was a review here, that stated that one of the men sounded “Gay”! Spiteful or ignorant (I can’t tell which), in my opinion, each character was represented appropriately - very well narrated!

Finally, a Goodreads reviewer stated that there was nothing masterful about Mr Montague; well, without giving away any spoilers, I think that reading the entire book (which she admitted to not doing), may give another perspective.

I’m enjoying this series. If you haven’t done so already, I would strongly advise that you start from book 1 (and listen to the audiobook)!
