The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

First the positive: exceptional performance by the actor. However I have struggled to finish the book. It is a series of surreal scenes abundant with allegories. It is not by any means a page turner, and past chapter 3, it really was a test of will to plough on and finish it.

Never ending sequence of surrealism and allegories

Julian Rhind-Tutt's performance reading of this lively new translation of Bulgakov's masterwork is extraordinary. His intelligent engagement with the text doesn't flag for a moment. He conveys the irony, wit and grotesque humour of the book with brio, imagination and evident delight. The very considerable cast of characters are vividly brought to life; their voices are remembered consistently by J R-T right through to the final pages. It's a very, very smart reading. That CAT!!! I truly didn't want this to end... A disturbing but hilarious novel which appals and delights all at once. The fantasy is wild but convincing, and very absorbing. Ranks as one of my very best Audible experiences. Thank you J R-T, Michael Karpelson and of course...Mikhail Bulgakov.

Bravura performance of a wonderful book

Fabulous narration that makes a challenging storyline come alive. I thoroughly recommend this book to all lovers of Russian literature.

This is about my all-time favourite book, and this translation is terrific. There is riotous humour and great tenderness and feeling, with some breathtaking descriptive passages.
Julian Rhind-Tutt is fantastic in his interpretation and conveys the complete range of emotions it contains. Even better than the print version is my present verdict.

Brilliant interpretation

Although overall an interesting book I did not always find it engaging and too often found it muddled, tedious and not particularly amusing. The best bits were the least fantasical/wacky sections describing an 'alternate' version of Christ's encounter with Pontius Pilate. It has, however, inspired some wonderful pictures of various scenes that can be easily found online. Maybe I needed a picture book version. As it was I listed to Julian Rhind-Tutt's brilliantly performed version - I think if I'd actually read it I'd have found it even harder going. Not a touch. for example, on One Hundred Years of Solitude, Alice in Wonderland or anything by Kafka.

Fantastical surreal satire that grinds a bit.
