Elizabeth Pringle lived all her long life on the Scottish island of Arran. But did anyone really know her? In her will she leaves her beloved house, Holmlea, to a stranger - a young mother she'd seen pushing a pram down the road over thirty years ago. It now falls to Martha, once the baby in that pram, to answer the question: why? Martha is coping with her mother's dementia and the possibility of a new life on Arran could be a new start.

A captivating story for fans of Rosamund Pilcher, Maeve Binchy and Rachel Joyce of the richness behind the so-called ordinary lives of women and the secrets and threads that hold them together.

And Kirsty Wark's second novel, The House by the Loch, a story of unlikely love and long-hidden family secrets set in the beautiful Scottish countryside, is out now.

I really enjoyed this book, especially since my house overlooks Arran and Holy Isle and I have stayed in Lamlash and know the beauty of the neighbourhood she describes in the book. It was fun to learn more about the history of the island during the war. It was one of those books that makes the setting almost a character in itself.

Although I enjoyed the story overall, I did feel like some of the plot lines were so neatly wrapped up that it seemed unrealistic. The sudden revelations of a few of the side characters was a bit of a stretch for me. Overall though, I would read something from this author again, but I feel like she could have wrapped things up a bit less neatly and have a more believable book. Not everything has to be resolved if the main character is at peace with it.

Enjoyable and well-written, but too tidy of an end

Would you consider the audio edition of The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle to be better than the print version?

I've not read the print version

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle?

That would be giving the story away somewhat - you'll know when you get there!

Which character – as performed by Siobhan Redmond – was your favourite?

I liked Catriona - she was so personable it was hard not to like her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes - I really enjoyed it and it always seemed like there was a twist around the next corner. Although it was obvious how the characters would end up, the fun part was seeing how they would get there and also hearing the story of Elizabeth unravel. It really makes you value what you have in family and friends.

The story stays with you

This was a very strange tale which carried me along with it's tale of the past interwoven by it's tale of the present.the last few chapters were riveting as the reason for Elizabeth's odd behaviour became clear.

An unusual story, well read by the narrator

Thought provoking book on so many levels. Martha is loosing her mother to the ravages of dementia but through a chance bequest learns of another's life and loss.
The mystery is carefully woven through the two protagonists stories.
Masterful prose. I loved every minute.

Part mystery, part love story, evokes Arran beautifully.

Despite a very minor puzzle about how the characters had enough money to afford to buy nice houses and travel etc. this kept my interest from slow start to emotional finish. it is a story filled with memories and emotion amongst decent people.

I really enjoyed it. A gentle & emotional tale.
