About this listen

A compelling thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.

Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

I've always enjoyed Michael Connelly's character driven stories. Bosch is an absolute legend and now his new female detective is awesome. the story kept me hooked and will look forward to reading more of her battles.

Brilliant writer.

I love the addition of the Lincoln Lawyer to the Bosch series and Renee Ballard is another welcome character. Hopefully there will be more in this series.

Always enjoy Michael Connelly books.

Constantly unwinding tales being concluded. Ballad a bit of a tart, unnecessarily so, but she is essentially a brilliant character that Connelly knows well!

Outstanding! This narrator is Ballad!

A new detective but the cleverly woven story is Connelly at the top of his game

Connelly 's new detective is as dogged as Bosch

Story is excellent. Final coming together absolutely not what I expected,so Connelly did a great job of diverting the reader! However, I struggled for a few chapters with the narrator. Her voice is quite monotone and there was little if any variation between characters. It's great to have a female lead and it really deserves a female narrator, but it's clearly more challenging to handle the male characters and sadly they all sound the same, so in some dialogue I was having to really concentrate on who was saying what. Eventually got used to it but I like the variation of character voices that the better narrators provide. It makes for a more immersive listening experience.

Great story, struggled with narrator
