About this listen

A dead man on the beach. A detective with everything to prove. And a secret that won't stay buried.

When a man’s body washes up on the North Yorkshire coast with a gunshot wound to the chest, DCI Tom Raven is handed the case. The only clue to the victim’s identity? A ring engraved with two names.

Raven hasn’t set foot in Scarborough for over thirty years. Now he’s back – leading a murder investigation and facing ghosts from his past.

The trail leads to an old friend turned shady businessman. But the deeper Raven goes, the more tangled the lies become – and the less he can trust the people around him.

Not everyone wants him solving this case. And not everyone wants him back.

Scarborough holds secrets. And someone will kill to keep them hidden.

Set on the North Yorkshire coast, the Tom Raven series is perfect for fans of David J Gatward, J M Dalgliesh, Simon McCleave, and British crime fiction.

Worst narrator I’ve heard, even worse than the grating American narrators I’ve come across. How on earth did this person become a narrator? Feel the writers’ choice of narrator has spoilt their hard work with his bizarre way of talking and as for his efforts at accents… even worse! (Btw writers “detritus” used way too many times.) Don’t think I can bear listen to anymore.

The awful, awful narration

This is the first book I have listened to by this author & I enjoyed the story very much. It was a bit different the detective having a past in Scarborough. Several red herrings & twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting but the narrator’s voice was oh so boring to listen to. I nearly gave up several times. Shame as I would like to carry on with the series but all of this series is read by same narrator so will give them a miss I think.

Really good story

Good story but narration a bit off putting. The characters voices were great, but the story in between very monotone

The story was good. But the narration was rubbish monotone. Would only listen to another book if fnarrated by someelse. Only have 3 stars for overall as narration spoilt the story

Story was good but ruined by narration

Excellent Who Dunnit, but sadly Dan Calley's voice intonation, rising at the end of each sentence became monotonous to listen to. I look more carefully at who is narrating before I select my next audio book.
