On 25 June, 1950, the invasion of South Korea by the Communist North launched one of the bloodiest conflicts of the last century. The seemingly limitless power of the Chinese-backed North was thrown against the ferocious firepower of the UN-backed South in a war that can be seen today as the stark prelude to Vietnam.

Max Hastings drew on first-hand accounts of those who fought on both sides to produce this vivid and incisive reassessment of the Korean War, bringing the military and human dimensions into sharp focus. Critically acclaimed on publication, The Korean War remains the best narrative history of this conflict.

Coming into this book with very little knowledge of the Korean War I thought it explained the background very clearly, and was easy to follow.

I felt like there was a good narrative throughout the book that explained and linked events in a coherent way.

There were an interesting range of opinions and stories from a range of front line soldiers and higher ranking officers.

Narration was great, very clear and easy to understand, with an appropriate tone throughout the book (be prepared for a couple of accents though!). Nice pace too.

Overall found this a very informative and interesting book.

Engaging overview of the Korean War

A fantastic and indepth breakdown of the lead up to and during the Korean War. Excellent accounts from both sides and the political goings on in the background.

Brilliant Hastings

Like all of Hastings ' work, this book is thoroughly engaging. Finished this within 2 weeks which is quite quick for a book this long

bloody marvellous

It’s good. A little out of date and not the most critical account of the conflict but a decent introduction. Told in an engrossing narrative that really holds the attention. A few instances of rather questionable accents dotted, in Hastings favourite words, ‘hither and thither’.

Entertaining
