About this listen

A historical tour de force that demolishes the myths and taboos that have surrounded Jewish and Israeli history, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a new account of both that demands to be reckoned with. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation—returned at last to its Biblical homeland?

Shlomo Sand argues that most Jews actually descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered far across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The formation of a Jewish people and then a Jewish nation out of these disparate groups could only take place under the sway of a new historiography, developing in response to the rise of nationalism throughout Europe.

The central importance of the conflict in the Middle East ensures that Sand's arguments will reverberate well beyond the historians and politicians that he takes to task. Without an adequate understanding of Israel's past, capable of superseding today's opposing views, diplomatic solutions are likely to remain elusive. In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel's future.

The initial chapters of this book was somewhat boring. I am glad I persisted and kept listening, it became so much more interesting. I love ancient history. The writer knows a lot about various different types of topics and weave everything together in a masterful way. There were so many questions I had about the timeline and implications of certain historical events. These are explained very well. Writer has extensive knowledge on history, history of religions, anthropology, sociology, political science and very logically explains a lot by showing references. Such an honest, unpretentious account. Thank you Shlomo Sand for writing this book. I hope more people can read this book and understand things better in a realistic historical context.

Amazing book I learned a lot from

A very insightful and interesting read into the history of the Jewish ‘people’ - written respectfully but with enough bite to keep it interesting. The Jews have a fascinating history which is told here whilst dispelling the Zionist stories currently held as truth. An important book and one all Jews should read.

Thorough

About the invention and reinvention of history, and its connection with the making of a people and a nation. Incredibly erudite work in/of critical historiography.

A fascinating book

Absolutely fabulous book. More important than ever in the current political climate, in light of the Gaza genocide. It's a travesty

The performance is comically bad to the point that it’s actually hard to mentally retain what you’ve heard. Outside of children’s TV shows, I’ve never heard anyone with such a bizarre cadence with wildly jarring intonation. I was really looking forward to this book, but it’s unlistenable
