Set in the eccentric backwater of Karakarook (pop. 1,374), New South Wales, this is the story of Douglas Cheeseman, a shy and clumsy engineer with jug-ears who meets Harley Savage, a woman who is known for being rather large and abrupt.

Douglas is there to pull down a quaint old bridge, and Harley aims to foster heritage. They are clearly on a collision course - but when they meet they are unaware that something unexpected is going to happen....

The performance was excellent. Such a soothing and interesting narration. Great story and internalisation of the characters. It fits the title perfectly. Their ideas of perfection and a redemption of sorts. I also loved how the characters were all so imperfect. And not a cliche in sight. I loved this book and will look out for more Kate Grenville.

I thought at the beginning that the fine detailed descriptions of the landscapes, people, conversations would become tiring, but it gave such depth and fascination. Thoroughly enjoyable!

hated it. The caracters are so annoying. I wanted to tell them to just speak and stop annalizing everything they said because it is just boring
