Great narration. The prose can be flowery and a little prolix in places but overall it's a great listen.

This is the first historical genre novel I have listened to and the fact that Robert Powell was reading it was one reason for choosing it.I just love his dulcet tones and the way he portrays the characters. Now I have found out what I have been missing in Elizabeth Chadwicks stories. Superb reading and a great story.
Lovely relaxing way to wind down at the end of the day.

William Marshall was a hostage at the age of 5. He learnt about the ways of the royal court and trained to be a squire and then a knight. He had a champion in Eleanor of Aquitaine and a jealous king in Henry the son of Eleanor. Jealousy of William by other knight’s and bishops caused a lot of trouble for William. He nearly lost his life for treason but was exonerated.

Later he had to go before King Richard to tell him he was loyal. Once his word is given he stays loyal. Richard accepted this but admitted that William was a man beyond compare as he had Honor.

William loved Eleanor all his life but he also loved his wife Isabell beyond anything else. They had children - 2 sons and a daughter. They were very happy. Finally.
