Lois Lowry’s The Giver is the quintessential dystopian novel, followed by its remarkable companions, Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Gripped. Transported. Inspired. Chilled. A world depicted in convincing detail. Held me throughout thanks to it's execution enthrallingly delivered.

Chillingly believable

Soothing and clear narrator, fascinating, edge of my seat kin of story.
Excited for the other books in the series.
The only drawback to me- who tend to listen to audiobooks at night to sleep-was the music added; I get why it’s put there, but non the less I found it distracting and thought it disturbed the listening experience more than elevating it. My biggest issue being it was too loud compared to the narrators voice.
The music is not constant, thankfully, and at some point I «got used to it», and managed to focus on the narrators voice and the story.
Is there is an option to get the book without music- I’d choose that for a second listen.

An amazing story.

Quite boring and uneventful. Interesting concept however. Had to read this for school and since I’m not really into dystopian literature I suppose I have some sort of bias.

I came across this book while looking for books suitable for young adult and adult readers for TESOL teachers and I would highly recommend it. I really enjoy dystopian literature as there is so much food for thought, but much of it is so dark and violent that it is difficult to share with new readers. This is really a wonderful book as the language is simple enough for new readers but the ideas allow for philosophical debate on a number of levels.

Great intro - dystopian fiction for young adults
