From his remote moorland home, David Hartley assembles a gang of weavers and land workers to embark upon a criminal enterprise that will capsize the economy and become the biggest fraud in British history. They are the Cragg Vale Coiners, and their business is clipping - the forging of coins, a treasonous offence punishable by death.

Ten hours of poetic Northern swearing combined with long lists of names and some of the most creative threats ever uttered in fiction. Beautiful, enigmatic, and memorable.

Tough, 'ard', foul and sweary

I thought this was brilliant. The narration brought the characters to life wonderfully. Hard men in a hard landscape. I’m glad I listened to it rather than reading it. Such a interesting story too. Can’t praise it enough. I wish Benjamin Myers could for Sussex what he has done here.

Fantastic

A wonderful tale of all things dark & beautiful. Grotesque, gory, phantasmagorical and true!

What a macabre joy to behold!

I would not usually go for something like this....it's pretty graphic and violent, but it's in keeping with the historical storyline. I didn't know anything about this aspect of history, and as a Northerner I'm glad I now do. David Hartley and his brothers were clearly organised crime of their day, but I don't feel this story 'glorifies' them too much...clearly 'King David' is always going to have a high opinion of himself, so the diary sections reflect this, but the other narration manages to show balance. The performance of the audio book is gritty and very good, even the endless lists are rendered less dull!
The notes at the end, particularly in relation to Parker and possible Heathcliff links are fascinating.

Fascinating story
