THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CLUB IN TOWN. THE DEADLIEST PLACE TO BELONG.

London, 1930. A body is found dumped on the common. No name, no obvious motive for the murder, and no one missing him.

When newly promoted Detective Inspector Matthew Stannard arrives in Craynebrook, he knows his reputation for catching a killer no other detective could catch precedes him. He knows, too, that his colleagues are waiting for him to fall flat on his face. So, when the murder investigation lands on his desk, Matthew realises he can't afford to make any mistakes.

All the clues lead to the town's most exclusive social club, where Matthew finds himself drawn into an unfamiliar world of power and influence, and where the members live and play by their own rules.

When club members start turning up dead, Matthew is convinced all the murders are connected. His superior orders him to tread carefully, keen to avoid a scandal.

But treading carefully isn't Matthew's style; he follows the evidence, wherever it may lead. This has served him well in the past. With this case, it may prove his undoing.

This is the first CK Harewood I've had the pleasure of listening to and it won't be the last. Matthew Stannard, a newly promoted D.I is moved to a small area where he has to make his own mark. The resident police don't like him from the start as he is an action man and they just want an easy life. The story is well written with more grit than most of the police procedurals set in that era and it is well paced with unexpected twists and turns. Mike Langan's narration is spot on and really helps make the book flow. Highly Recommended. I am already at 90 percent in the second of the series, just had to keep up with the D.I.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the narrator and voluntarily leave this honest review.

Murder most foul.

This is the best murder mystery I've listened to /read in a long while. The characters are great, the plot is very complex with lots of twists and turns. There are more red herrings and corpses to shake a stick at. A story equal to those of Horowitz. Narration was excellent with a wide range of accents. First class.

Absolutely brilliant!

Very good book. With a very able narrator. I like a detective novel and love WW2 or period stories. I had high hopes. But for some reason couldn't engage. That's not to say others will love it. As is testament to the many five star reviews. Pity. I was hoping to devour the whole series l.

Great introduction to a new detective. The narrator did a top job on the different characters, which helped me a lot on keeping track of them. The story was excellent, not bogged down with unnecessary 'waffle' and paced well. 5 stars

Really enjoyed

Great book, a bit more gritty than some of the 1920s detective books. Hope there are more to come.
