About this listen

Attorney Craig Malcault’s special problem is a blessing in disguise: Colleagues in the intelligence community at times do not trust the mental faculties of the rogue, former special operations agent. He could have been Craig’s favorite client. The international spy rings with their own agendas need his expertise. Ara Pacis,’ the failed state’s notorious, covert leadership is preparing for another power grab, but now the complete destruction of Ara Pacis by any means is the spy rings’ ultimate goal.

If the failed state survives, its secrets will test the sanity of mankind, and the agent has the key to that experiment.

Craig knows the agent wants a new life, but is he ready to take on the risk? The case will bring Craig one step closer to solving the mystery of Ara Pacis' sinister world where the extrajudicial killing of unarmed non-combatants can be the norm. As much the classified, covert leadership has promised Craig. Noblesse oblige when the law and morals don’t.

I was completely drawn into the world again, and this one took things even deeper. The emotional weight hit harder than I expected. The narration made every scene feel vivid and personal. I found myself pausing just to absorb certain moments. It’s one of those stories that lingers long after it ends.

“They are ready to kill!” Patrick exclaimed, the character from a tiny town in Wales whose wife only married him because the town was too small and his wife had not many other options. It’s short, snappy sentences like this where Maria Ian (the author) shows off their adeptness at creating these amazing little back stories where we get in depth with the characters so incredibly quickly, which makes the story unfurl that much more excitingly. If you like interweaving tales of great characters, intriguing situations, spies, and drama then this installment of the cave sun series is for you.

I wasn’t expecting a legal-intelligence thriller to dig this deep into moral ambiguity, but this one really surprised me. The tension stays high, but what stuck with me most was how it explores the cost of secrecy and trust when the stakes are global. The world of Ara Pacis is eerie and unsettling in the best way—like you’re not sure who to root for, and that’s kind of the point. Great if you’re into layered stories that blur lines between duty and conscience.

I wasn’t planning to get into another fantasy series, but this one totally pulled me in. I listened while walking my dog and found myself taking longer routes just to keep going. The pacing is just right, and I really connected with the deeper themes, especially around trust and change. Definitely added some depth to my daily routine.
