There was a time when talking came easily. When neighbours chatted over fences, when we lingered at shop counters, when the bus ride home was full of friendly faces.

We didn't call it "connection" back then—it was just living. We were part of each other's days in small, effortless ways.

Then life sped up. We built screens between us, routines around us, and caution inside us. We learned to look down, scroll, hurry. Somewhere along the way, we forgot how simple it can be—to talk, to listen, to be human together.

This book isn't about mastering conversation techniques or memorising clever lines. It's about remembering—how to see people again, how to approach with warmth, how to notice the world in front of you.

It's about reclaiming the quiet joy of everyday humanity — the kind that doesn't need perfection, only presence.

When you speak kindly, listen fully, and engage genuinely, you help restore something the world desperately misses: belonging.

This is a great wake up call to get out our self confinement and to go into the world and reconnect with our friends, neighbours but mostly strangers. McGovern gives great advice on how to and indeed, why we need to talk to those around us. We don’t need to do anything far out of our comfort zones. Not only might we make new friends but we enrich ourselves by listening to and learning from others. We already have most of the skills but this book gently gives us hints and tips on how to engage with others. Strangers are just the friends we haven’t met yet…

A return to human connection
