I loved this audio book and I am sorry that it is over. Don’t be put off by the first five minutes which you hear as a free sample, the narrator, Lucy Scott, soon finds her feet. Lucy Scott was really excellent – both with the male and with the female voices. The stories were very enjoyable – particularly Mapp and Lucia which brings the two ladies together and the following novels. From this point, I really started to root for Lucia because she is such a nice person compared to Mapp, and all the characters (apart from Mapp who is so antipatica) started to feel like lovely old friends and it was so nice to spend time in their company. The sound quality was fantastic, lovely and loud. This is the kind of audio book that you can listen to over and over again, so it is excellent value for money. The narrator only made two mistakes: in the final novel, she says “line missing from scanned copy” – a minor editing error that doesn’t matter – and she cannot do a Birmingham accent; however, as the padre hardly ever speaks in a Birmingham accent, this doesn’t matter at all.

Mrs Lucas (Lucia) rules over the little village of Riseholme with an imperious eye and cod Italian. She is extremely protective of her superiority and treats others as her minions. She is very much in the style of Hyacinth Bucket from "Keeping up Appearances". Her pretensions and desperate attempts to retain her superiority provide the opportunity for the humorous and entertaining stories in this collection. If you enjoy gentle comedy on the English class system, then this is for you. It is good lightweight fun, although you do have to have a good appreciation of English middle class society to enjoy it.

Lucy Scott is one of my favourite audiobook narrators and does a splendid job with the subtle humour and sarcasm in these stories. Good stuff.
