Colditz - the dreaded POW camp was supposed to be impregnable. It was the German fortress from which there was no escape. It had been escape-proof in the 1914-18 war and was to be again in the Second World War, according to the Germans... This is the true story that has passed into legend: the story of the incredible courage and daredevil ingenuity of those who refused to admit defeat - those who burrowed, leapt and ran their way to freedom. It is the story of the finest escapers of World War Two, culminating in the author’s own dramatic escape in 1942.

The narration was brilliant, the story excellent, very well told. A stark reminder for the many history deniers that seem to have sprung up recently.

An excellent story very well told

I first read this book a lifetime ago but holed up thanks to COVID my daughter and I took to watching old movies and after watching The Great Escape together WW11 POW endurance and escapes laid heavily on my mind. Unable to find the Colditz story serialisation readily available And searching in vain for our old copy of Pat Reid’s book I was pleased to find it superbly narrated on audible. The story has lost nothing of its power to wonder at the determination and ingenuity of so many and the matter of fact telling of many failures and some tragic fatalities only enhanced the feeling of thankfulness for those who did succeed.

Listening to what it was actually like in Colditz is fascinating. The understated style of the prose as well as the reader add to the enormity of what the escapees tried to do and sometimes succeeded in doing. I cannot ever imagine myself having the same ingenuity or perseverance required to endure their imprisonment. But to listen to what they got up only adds to the legacy of their efforts and abilities. True grit and heroism to do what they did under the daily threat of possible death.

Fascinating detailed story from Colditz
