Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

I’m a failed husband but I’m trying to be a good father, and look after my ex wife.

I found myself in tears listening to this. Wishing I had tried harder. Been better.

That’s not to say I’m taking all the blame but there’s so much I could have done better.

Every man should read this, even if they’re a good man. It reinforces that it’s right to be chivalrous, kind and enjoy the beauty of intimacy. Patience. Kindness. Courage. Gentility. Giving of time and energy.

Thank you, Louise. I hope many people read this. It is, in my view, essential reading.

Profound and saddening

I recommend this to everyone to just reflect on. Only section I lost the line of argument was re marriage (last chapter near the end, although I do agree). Everything else I felt was objectively sound, the last 15-20mins was a bit subjective

Outstanding

Such a good book! For someone who grew up at the start of the SATC era and that casual sex was the ultimate female empowerment this book was a powerful read! I hope more young woman pick this up and read it! Louise needs to go on more podcasts as she is a voice that needs to be heard!

Just brilliant!

A truly important contribution to modern social thought. This book articulated so much so well lin a way that transcends the received wisdom of both Conservative and Liberal sexual politics. Brava to the author.

Colossal and grounded argument

First, the audiobook is great, Perry’s narration of the book is fantastic, she has a pleasant and calm voice.

The success of this book, I think, is that voices the concerns and feelings of the common woman in opposition to the proselytism of the elite ones, Perry being an elite woman herself has witnessed the horrors of sexual violence and that shapes her world view. Case in point, it is a matter of historical record that liberal thinkers have engaged with the most iliberal acts in human history and liberal feminists are no different, they just represent the interests of the nymphomaniac, social agitator middle class in the west at a great expense, namely the wellbeing of the rest of us. I truly celebrate this book, a liberal apostate delivering a massive blow to their hegemonic position, the tide is beginning to turn.

Post liberalism is here to stay.
