I found this a very engaging story about how ordinary people put their lives on the line for family and country. I loved how Kezzia kept up the morale of Tom and his soldier friends sending him so much love in the form of her very imaginative letters and her unique cakes. Jacqueline Winspear writes so well, creating wonderful characters whose experiences brought more than one tear to my eye. I felt she told the stories of the four main characters with such depth of feeling and though the ending was realistically sad, it was not maudlin.
Sadly, I found the narrator accurate in her reading, but she did not give any impression of emotion so that her delivery was a little flat.
Over many years I have loved Jacqueline Winspear's series about Maisie Dobbs; this standalone novel is equally wonderful.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

l highly recommend this story. It focuses on the first world war and the recruits from rural areas. It gives an insight as to why so many young men signed up in without an awareness of the personal consequences.

The relationship between the two main characters, also the illustration of a way of life lost after the First World War.

No. This is the first, brilliantly read.

l am a great fan of Jaqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs' books. I think this one is better and l hope there may be a follow up. i would love to know what happens next to the main character.
