About this listen
The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.
Washington, D.C., 1950
Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, an all-female boarding house in the heart of the US capital, where secrets hide behind respectable facades.
But when the mysterious Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbours – a poised English beauty, a policeman’s daughter, a frustrated female baseball star, and a rabidly pro-McCarthy typist – into an unlikely friendship.
Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their troubled lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. And when a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?
Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

The lives and the stories of the people in the story are set in the 50’s in the era of McCarthyism. The story follows the individual lives of a small group of people and winds their stories together showing how their own personal experiences within the context of the political and cultural climate of that time, impacts on their lives. As the story of each individual is revealed, the reader sees into their lives and the plot evolves as the characters begin to interact and come together. The storyline and the plot of itself is fascinating and exciting.
However, this book is much more than that, as woven into and part of the story, there is something else - the era in which it is set.
This book touched me deeply and its humanity moved me to tears. For me, it focused a searing spotlight on the reality of the prevailing iattitudes and political dictates within America at that time showing how it impacted on people’ s lives. This book is a story of then and pertinent in a terrifying way to now. It shows how McCarthyism ripped its way through the American constitution, violating peoples lives, taking away their freedoms, dividing and “othering” the community and the culture of their Country. In stark contrast, as part of the story, it shines a bright light onto the constitution of their Country and the values and humanity, which are the foundations of it. Given what we now see in America, this is a story which shines a light on our own times and if we will listen, calls us to action.
Kate Quinn is a master storyteller.
