Tammy Pierre is called upon to help solve a murder that appears to involve Obeah — a form of voodoo practiced in Trinidad.
Her father’s Trinidadian roots give the police reason to bring her in, but a black candle ritual offers little else to go on.

The story itself was well written. I particularly enjoyed the jump between the various perspectives in different chapters. Tammy is a strong lead character, however there is still a level of vulnerability that’s brings a slightly softer edge to her.
I initially feared that this book might be too gruesome for me having read the blurb. I enjoy murder mysteries but can’t handle too much graphic gore. I was pleasantly surprised and found this book to be an excellent balance of detail and moderation.
I have not listened to the previous book in the serious but will definitely be seeking it out. I very much enjoyed authors style for this book.
