It's the night of 12th November 2019. The worst flooding in 50 years hits the city of Venice. 85 per cent of La Serenissima is underwater. Gale force winds roar across the lagoon and along the narrow streets. And the body of Dr Jennifer Whiteread—a young British art historian, specialising in the depiction of angels in Venetian painting—is found floating in a flooded antique bookshop on the Street of the Assassins.

As the local police struggle to restore order to a city on its knees, Nathan Sutherland—under pressure from the British ambassador and distraught relatives—sets out into the dark and rain-swept streets in an attempt to discover the truth behind Whiteread's death.

The trail leads to the 'Markham Foundation', a recent and welcome addition to the list of charities working to preserve the ancient city. Charming, handsome and very, very rich, Giles Markham is a well-known and popular figure in the highest Venetian social circles, and has the ear of both the mayor and the patriarch.

But a man with powerful friends may also have powerful enemies. And Nathan is about to learn that, in Venice at least, angels come in many forms—merciful, fallen and vengeful....

Some of the Italian words I’d like to know the meaning of, I can probably work out the meaning but not knowing the spelling is annoying. I realise there’s nothing can be done about this. Just an observation

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and so well narrated gave a really good feel of Venice.

I have all Philip Gwynne Jones', Nathan Sutherland novels and this latest addition is another excellent romp, set against Venice's atmospheric backdrop, the city more a character than a location. The established roster of characters return, with a couple of strong additions... and some 'back stories' are further explored to good entertaining effect. The central theme remains that of the hapless Honorary Consul being dragged semi-reluctantly into an investigation of serious crime. The winning personality of Nathan and his coterie of associates is reinforced and enhanced and the novel ends satisfyingly with all 'T's crossed and 'I's dotted. I did not instantly warm to Tim Bruce, when listening to his first outing as narator but by this time, found myself greeting him as an old friend, his delivery a perfect compliment to Nathan's inner voice. All in all- another excellent tale, winningly delivered.

I enjoyed spending some more time with Nathan Sutherland & his friends, I feel that the cat got less to do this time out though…!
This one has a neat little mystery, with just enough twists & turns.
The backdrop of Venice suffering through flood added to it.
The book contains one of my most & one of my least favourite things.
A reference to Siouxsie Sioux, in the form of Lucia, whom I hope will return in future books, and on the least column, blasphemy. I’d much prefer to hear the strongest foul language, enough to make a Venetian docker blush, than that.
That is my only complaint about this series. If there was more effing & blinding, and less of the J’s & C’s, they’d be spot on!
