The United Kingdom has been labelled Terf Island - sometimes affectionately and sometimes contemptuously - for its successful resistance to transgender ideology. This is the story of the brave and determined women who led the charge against trans activist demands which undermined their rights and jeopardised the physical and mental health of children. They dragged shadowy campaigns into the daylight, exposing the harm that would result, and the harm that had already been done. They forced policy change, set legal precedents and changed public opinion. Fiona McAnena has been right there campaigning with them. Her unique insight and personal involvement brings to life the intimate human stories behind the movement to Keep Britain Terfy. This extraordinary, inspiring, furious and sometimes funny account shows how a few women acting on their convictions turned back a tide which threatened to sweep away the rights their foremothers fought for.

I learnt a lot about some of the women, particularly Stephanie Davis-Arai, who I knew about through her work in Transgender Trend, but not about everything she did leading up to that. Writing such a book will always lead to personal choices about who to add, but for me, there were glaring omissions. Eg some of the radical feminists in the forefront of the struggle, and groups like Labour Women's Declaration and others. A good book, well written, which ended much too quickly, leaving me wanting more.
Brilliantly narrated by Hazel Moon Audio, who has an excellent reading voice, superb clarity and speed, with none of the irritating issues that are too prevalent in audio books. *****

If like me over the last 14 years, you missed a lot of the news headlines, the TV debates, the posters, the demos this book is a great place to catch up with the key protagonists and pivotal moments. Fiona McAnena’s book is thoroughly well researched with events, facts and emotions all wrapped together and set out in chronologically organised stories, most of them interlinked. An epic piece of research and writing.

Hazel Moon's narration is the icing on the cake. It brings the book to life, as she reads the stories and draws us into the very personable accounts of the women involved, women with tremendous resilience and courage. Women who instead of giving up, looked for new strategies and solutions. From the early days of Mums Net, the living room leaflet campaigns, tv interviews, rallying women’s voices and the legal successes.

The book and narration does what it says on the cover, it tells us why the UK came to be known as TERF Island and documents a part of the women's movement by women who were there and fully present. It documents how women have been misrepresented, silenced and suppressed but joined together and fought back.

Essential listening, it’s the pandora's box to give us the knowledge needed to make sense of this resistance.

This is a must read / listen for anyone who has been involved in the fight to restore the rights of women & girls over the past 15yrs in the UK. Highly recommended also for anyone who is only just coming to realise that womens' rights to safety, dignity & fairness had been removed & recommended for those who are still in the dark! The women in this book were major players in the fight back. When these women stood up, their employers, many in their social networks and the public services they thought they could rely on, turned against them. If you want to know why that was, why they put women & girls everywhere before themselves, Terf Island is the book that does that!

An incredible piece of womens’ social history!

I am a veteran of the debate around gender identity ideology and yet I did not know so much of the story of Stephanie Davies-Arai. She really clocked the risks so early on and like many of the women who have helped resist, she has had her own struggles with health to deal with.

I really appreciate that Fiona has captured the roots of the resistance. She has done a thorough job. If there is any criticism I have, it’s just that the book records Maya’s initial defeat and then JK Rowling stepping up, in quite a detached way and yet I know how women felt at that time. The sense of desolation in December 2019 was palpable and pervasive. It was such a low point. And then JK Rowling arrived and it rallied the troops like nothing else could. It was so extraordinary and I was in bits afterwards.

I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to find out more about how Britain has made progress in resisting gender identity ideology. This is essential reading / listening if you want to understand.

There are many who try to denigrate the women who have resisted, saying that they are far right in their politics and that they’ve taken money from right wing sources, yet it’s clear from reading this book that this is wrong and an underestimation of how grass roots action with lots of women contributing a little money each, can become such a potent political force. The resistance began on the left. It’s only ended up being pushed right, because the left wing of British politics has been unable to stand up for materialist class analysis.

Lastly, the narration was clear and did not detract from the content.

So good that I’ve got the hard copy too

I loved this book. It is a vibrant and detailed account of the battle for women’s rights in the UK (aka TERF Island) and the women who have played such a central part in the struggle. Inspiring.
It is skilfully narrated by Hazel Moon.
