What happens when the person you love struggles to find happiness—and you slowly begin losing yourself in the process?

Surviving Love is a deeply personal memoir and guide to self-reflection that explores the emotional challenges of loving someone who lives with chronic unhappiness. Through honest storytelling, real-life experiences, and thought-provoking reflection exercises, author A.J. Zenwell shares his journey through marriage, emotional isolation, self-discovery, divorce, and unexpected reconciliation.

This is not a book about blaming a spouse or telling people whether they should stay or leave a relationship. Instead, it is an exploration of personal responsibility, emotional resilience, and the difficult lessons learned when one person's unhappiness begins to shape the emotional climate of an entire family.

Listeners will discover insights on:

  • Maintaining your own emotional well-being during difficult relationships
  • Understanding the difference between compassion and responsibility
  • Avoiding the trap of carrying another person's emotional burdens
  • Rediscovering yourself after years of survival mode
  • Finding hope, perspective, and meaning through life's most challenging seasons

Part memoir, part personal-growth journey, and part workbook for self-reflection, Surviving Love invites listeners to examine their own relationships and consider a powerful question:

Can you remain yourself while loving someone who struggles to be happy?

Whether you are navigating relationship challenges, rebuilding your sense of self, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of emotional resilience, Surviving Love offers an honest and compassionate perspective on one of life's most difficult journeys.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this, but I ended up finishing it in one evening. There were a few moments that really hit home because the emotions felt genuine. It didn't feel like someone trying to tell me what to do, just someone sharing what they'd been through. I appreciated that.

While i am not in a committed relationship, i did find this book to an eye opening, thought provoking experience! My childhood memories of my parents marriage are very similar to what the author endured. I found this book useful in helping me understand why my father maid the choices he did in his marriage.

As a child of a man who survived, i encourage you to read this book!

Surviving Love is a calm, reflective, and surprisingly validating listen for anyone navigating an unhappy marriage while trying not to lose their sense of self. Rather than offering dramatic solutions or quick fixes, A. J. Zenwell focuses on practical emotional survival, self-awareness, and the process of reclaiming your own identity while still living within a complicated relationship.

What stood out to me most was the tone. The advice feels steady and grounded, not reactive or overly simplistic. It acknowledges how isolating it can feel to stay in a relationship that is emotionally unfulfilling, while still encouraging the listener to shift attention back to themselves instead of waiting for external change.

Hearing it narrated by the author adds a layer of intimacy that fits the subject matter well. It feels personal, almost like a direct conversation, which makes the more reflective parts of the book land more deeply. The pacing is steady and thoughtful, which works well for the content.

I appreciated that the focus is less on labeling the relationship and more on what you can do internally to stop feeling stuck. It emphasizes boundaries, emotional clarity, and rebuilding your own life alongside uncertainty, rather than postponing your happiness.

If you are looking for a gentle but honest audiobook that helps you reframe your situation and start focusing on your own well-being again, Surviving Love is a meaningful and supportive listen.

I felt like this was very authentic and genuine advice, the chapters were consice to where I got the impact of the story, but didn't lose the message. It really helps you learn to let go of a love that doesn't love you back.
