About this listen

The murdered man had been an agent - once, long ago. But George Smiley's superiors at the Secret Service want to see the crime buried, not solved. Smiley will not leave it at that, not when it might lead him all the way to Karla, the elusive Soviet spymaster . . .

Smiley's People is a thrilling confrontation between one of the most famous spies in all fiction and his Cold War rival, Karla. Like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Honourable Schoolboy, it is as tense and unforgettable as only le Carré's novels can be.

The delicate plotting of the book is well conveyed by the sensitive reading and the voices of the different characters in the story are well defined. It is hard to stop listening and the subtleties of the thoughts feelings and action are evident all through this book.

Magnificently read and totally gripping

Yes. I still see Alex Guinness through Simon Russell-Beales voice but this reading is so well preformed. I have listened twice now and the story and the reading are still gripping.

Smiley captures you once again.

Loved it - I could imagine Alec Guinness in the role of Smilley. The book contains a whole role of well described characters who truly come alive because of the authors penmanship. Recommend.

I have read this story many times. Simon Russell Beale’s performance is perfect. He reads with respect and restraint, letting the authors words speak. I hope he has recorded more Le Carré: I shall seek them out. It’s excellent to have an unabridged version too. I enjoyed this very much. Recommended
