About this listen

Dark secrets haunt a small town lawyer…

Leland Monroe lost everything… His big city job, his sterling reputation and, worst of all, his loving wife. Now he’s starting over, setting up shop in his quiet hometown of Basking Rock. And struggling to repair his relationship with his troubled son.

But Basking Rock holds dark memories for Leland. And even darker secrets…

When a case involving Leland’s high school sweetheart reveals a tangled web of corruption, Leland realizes it’s not just his client’s life that’s at stake. Powerful forces surface to threaten the precious few loved ones he has left.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As Leland’s cases pile up, he begins to uncover a rot that runs to the core of Basking Rock. From dirty cops, to corrupt prosecutors, and even organized crime. Only Leland will stand up for his innocent clients, even as each case puts his career… and his life… on the line.

Leland Monroe brings justice to his small town, no matter the cost. Three complete legal thriller novels, for one bargain price…

This three book set introduces Leland Munroe, his teenage son and the canny PI whilst following their development and relationship arcs. It's set in South Carolina in a small town where Leland started life and retreats to his origins when faced with a problem that forces him to switch from prosecution to defence. We hear of his financial, ethical and relationship struggles as well as how he champions the underdog and uses his knowledge of the law and courtroom tactics to defend and vindicate his clients. The three books in this set are presaented in the correct order and I think each is better than the predecessor. They are: Defending Innocence; Influencing Justice and Interpreting Guilt. The stakes financially, legally and in peril for our core cast increase in each book. Reading in order gives you the needed backstory as characters carry over and you witness the character developments. The first story involves defending the son of a school friend and fighting against big odds against the defendant. The second story is mainly about a social influencer so more money than Leland is used to, but her legal case is stacked agasinst her and our hero. Hard work from the defence team goes beyond reasonable doubt and exposes the real culprit. Lots of courtroom drama and explanation of the issues. The last book has high physical and ethical stakes for our team as well as an unlikely and powerful enemy lurking behind the legal and social obstacles. A satisfying takedown that sets up further plot lines.

The narrator does an excellent job of rendering accents, mood and consistently rendering the male and female voices so it's clear who is speaking.

This is a fabulous trilogy that will keep you gripped and also having you laughing. I have to admit my favourite character is Squatter and I really wish we saw more of him throughout the books as he's obviously a beloved little fellow, even if he had been foisted on Leland when he moved in. As you move through the books you see Leland grow in confidence in his new role of defending lawyer from his previous job as prosecutor. I'm really hoping to see a romance blossom between him and his PI later in this series.
