This is a finale that feels enormous in scope while somehow remaining painfully intimate at the same time, and I was kind of stunned by how it completely subverted all my expectations while still fulfilling every promise the series had made from the beginning.

I will admit I was not always as emotionally attached as I wanted to be because the sheer number of POVs sometimes created a little distance for me, but then that is where the audiobook narration by Allan Walker really helped me out, as he elevated so much of the emotional experience for me. He gives every character such a distinct voice and presence, and I loved how the pain, fear, anger, and tenderness in these performances absolutely bleeds through every part of the narration.

This unconventional tale of heroism, sacrifice, connection, compassion, and the terrifying vulnerability of hope moved me on a way deeper level than I was ever anticipating, and I am honestly in awe of how literally everything just comes full circle in a way that feels so earned, profound, satisfying, and emotionally honest without ever feeling too neat or perfect. Philip Chase did something really special with The Edan Trilogy, and I feel like this is one of those deeply layered stories that is going to sit with me for a very long time to come.

This was a re-read on audio for me. It's still my favourite of the trilogy, even better brought to life by Allen Walker's narration! Allen's range in voices is very very close to that of Steven Pacey and not so far from Jeff Hays either, in my opinion. I liked his renditions of Bagsac, Galdor, Gnorn and Orvandil the most, but the elf was pretty cool too. The female characters' voices felt quite natural again, though I think they had less "page time" in this instalment.

Already being familiar with the story, and having re-read it in a much shorter timespan, I particularly appreciated the (spiritual) transformations the characters experienced as well as the thematic exploration, this time around. While there's still plenty of action, I prefer the more equal balance between quieter moments and battle scenes, compared to book 2.

I'm pretty sure I realised it already on my first read, but apart from similarities to Avatar the Last Airbender, there's quite some thematic and spiritual overlap with Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood), my favourite anime of all time (if you don't count Avatar as anime). After One Piece, Philip should really pick that one up, I'm sure it would resonate a lot with him!

It definitely stuck the landing and became my favourite book of the trilogy. I was entranced by the prose and narration. Dayraven’s journey is so compelling to follow, and brings up questions about the importance of empathy. How we, as humans have the capability to be good and loving and that’s worth nurturing and fighting for.

I think the narration was even better than in the previous books if that’s possible. Made me cry and laugh out loud on multiple occasions. Can’t wait for the prequel to come out on audio in the future, as well!

PS. Day and the Elf reminded me a lot of Neo and agent Smith! Wonder I’m alone in that?
