About this listen

Red Dwarf - Better Than Life is the second and final instalment of this hilarious sci-fi comedy.

Narrated by Chris "Rimmer" Barrie, Better Than Life finds the crew trapped in a mind-boggling computer game that is threatening their lives and safety of the ship. One by one, they enter the game to rescue each other - and one by one, they become trapped! Holly will have to use his mega brain to solve this one.

I had this performance on tape in the early 1990s and it’s lovely to hear it now as fresh as it was then.

I’ve seen some reviews comment on the music between chapters. That was where the tape ended and you needed to turn over. Live with it.

Exactly as it was on tape.

This book isn't as good as it's predecessor, whilst Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers luxuriated around the characters, this is more similar to a condensed version of the TV series. It all hangs together (just about) but the reader lurches from situation to situation, comedy moment to comedy moment in the second half of the book, whilst the first half of the book keeps the readers trapped in an inescapable computer game. It's a fun listen - and if you've read my previous review of Chris Barrie (the original Rimmer) as a narrator you will know that I'm furious I can't give him 8 stars. When the book does finally lurch to a close, the ending is well worth waiting for.

The second book starts in better than life and exactly where it left off maybe a few months or weeks later it is hard to tell but later on, the story moves forward. It is amazing to see how some of the facts in the book line up so closely with some of the episodes from the TV series. It made it a little slow going at times yet the similarities with minor differences made it easier to read. It was also interesting to get more background on some of the species that they encountered come from.

The character of Lister grows greater and you can see the entire crew becoming more substantial as their characters grow. Lister being the greatest of all of them for specific reasons. You see more into their subconscious as well as knowing that they are learning in their roundabout ways. Also meet the toaster that is obnoxious, proud and a show off in many a way. Another good book in the series, bring on the next one.
