Getting a break was a pipe dream, something that Desmond McLaughlin realized in short order. Fate had her favorite squeaky toy, and its name was McLaughlin. But at least he had his girls to support him and the friends he’d made aboard the Fist of Defiance, as well as the relationships that continue to grow, both into friendships and something more.

In addition to looking after his girls, Desmond is now faced with the unexpected addition of a trio of innocent, trusting lives in the form of the three sevrax they rescued during the final raid against a major base of the Heralds of Whispers. His relationship with the quester in charge ensured they were released to him, but what the hell is he supposed to do with pets like these while he’s fighting to recover from his own injuries?

Deciding to make the best of it, Arsenal heads back to a planetary base to ensure Desmond gets the attention he needs, which will give him the best chance at recovery in the wake of the battle against the upper echelons of the Heralds of Whispers. All the while, the universe continues to spin around him, the gears of time grinding away without a care for those caught within their spokes.

How much of a difference can one man make against the horrors that haunt the spaces between stars? No one is sure, but that isn’t going to stop Desmond, nor will it slow down Clan McLaughlin as they loyally follow in his wake.

*** Monster Girls In Space is a Sci-Fi, fantasy, semi-military, men’s romance, progression fantasy about a man becoming a space-wizard amongst a universe full of monster girls (it’s in the title, you should have expected that part). Expect adventure, mischief, magic, fighting, and romance in a galaxy that is curious what sort of mischief Humanity will get up to.

We get more slice of life in this book, but it is much less action packed than prior books. as such it feels like it's setting things up while also dragging the overall pace of the series down.

first the cons:

the academy setup here feels a bit wasted - we don't get to know any of the other adepts, or share in their leadership training. and Desmond unfortunately becomes a bit insufferable in this book. he has a saviour complex that seems pandered to by the leadership and the narrative makes him seem undeservedly righteous. he gets intimidating with a doctor who RIGHTLY points out that he's undone a lot of hard work she's been supporting him on. and then his guards seem ready to fly off the handle at Normal conversation prompts. everything is overblown and dramatic.

this leads to the book feeling a bit padded. especially as we don't meet or get much insight into the officer academy classes or training beyond the simulated leadership course, which feels a bit overmuch. Des seems too invested in a training exercise, which reminds me of how much stock everyone put into antecedents legacy Sims in that series. I'd have loved to see des bonding with other officers, sharing thoughts, struggles etc. that's how officer academies work - building you up, talking through leadership theory and examples.

on the pros: the characters remain really consistent and clear. the world building and magic system are fantastic, and the ongoing broader meta plot on Earth and with the nobility continues to grow, which is fantastic. I want to see how the world develops overall and how it pans out, as the story use this tale as a sort of "pit stop" to set out plot hooks which I hope gets used in the next installment.

worth a read but be aware it's a slow burn.

great world building, the story stutters
