About this listen

Everyone feels foolish, embarrassed, judged or criticised at times, but this becomes a problem when it undermines your confidence and prevents you from doing what you want to do. Extreme social anxiety and shyness can be crippling, but they are readily treated using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

In this fully revised and updated edition, Dr Gillian Butler provides a practical, easy-to-use self-help course which will be invaluable for those suffering from all degrees of social anxiety.

Overcoming self-help guides use effective therapeutic techniques to treat long-standing and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical.

A lot of well known things are mentioned in the beginning which made me feel like I wanna stop listening, but I kept going and found the book to be quite useful later on. Nothing groundbreaking, but I found the way it frames what one needs to focus on very valuable.

Boring start but gets really good later on

I love the overcoming books, but this one was the least helpful. Yes it makes sense to be yourself in relationships and friendships, but you cannot be yourself at work. At work you are required not to tell customers or workmates what you think of them and their behaviour - which I would if I were able to be myself and give an honest response. If work is the cause of your social anxiety, I would recommend reading etiquette and body language books instead, or at least as well as this book, because they helped me far more than this book.

The overall message of this book is be yourself
