The book that defined the cyberpunk movement, inspiring everything from The Matrix to Cyberpunk 2077.

The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel.

William Gibson revolutionised science fiction in his 1984 debut Neuromancer. The writer who gave us the matrix and coined the term 'cyberspace' produced a first novel that won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards, and lit the fuse on the cyberpunk movement.

More than three decades later, Gibson's text is as stylish as ever, his noir narrative still glitters like chrome in the shadows and his depictions of the rise and abuse of corporate power look more prescient every day. Part thriller, part warning, Neuromancer is a timeless classic of modern SF and one of the 20th century's most potent and compelling visions of the future.

stunning sci fi debut that still backs a punch 34 years later. my only regret is not engaging at the time as Gibson’s work has so evidently shaped some of the greatest writers of my life.

Well ahead of his time. And ours. This author is a visionary. Read his books. Understand.

I know it’s a modern classic and introduces all these wonderful concepts but the start at least is a confusing overlay of characters and events. The “voices” of each character are indistinguishable or for some people the narrator uses weird accents, But then the narrator slips in and out of the accent while the character is talking. Some of these accents are borderline stereotypical as well. As there are sections where characters just take turns speaking it is really hard to follow what is going on when there is no distinction between them.
There is lots of rich description of places and new technology but it is mixed with old technology, so it’s not THAT innovative. For example the book describes computer printout around a room. In a civilisation where people can enter an otherworldly matrix of cyberspace.
I’ve had it in my library too long to be able to return it, so I’ll keep it and may try again another day.

Couldn’t finish this. Part due to performance and part story

This is groundbreaking book, credited with defining a whole genre of sci-fi ( Cyberpunk), hugely influential and prescient. An absolute must read completely ruined by the casting of narrator who obviously has never read it before or understands its literary importance, Firstly Case and Molly are not British in the book so why pick a British narrator in the first case? The accent does not match the vernacular at all. Why is Julius Dean given a weird Welsh accent and Chiba is obviously pronounced CHEEBA. I have up listening after a few chapters ( as a long time fan I have read it many times) Does William Gibson get a say in this? Do yourself a favour, buy a copy of the book and just read it yourself. It is brilliant and this narration is just not up to job.

A masterpiece ruined by poor narration

The choice of the British narrator to give none of the characters described in the novel as coming from the Sprawl American accents is deeply strange.

The most odd choicr of all is to give Armitage -an American special forces hacking specialist burned in an attack on Russia - an Eastern European/Russian accent.
