After playing a TV sleuth for years, Rita Martin retires to the sleepy town of Frantham-on-Sea. Here on the Dorset coast, she runs her own immaculate guest house, and life is blissfully quiet.

But then a few doors down, harmless old Mrs. Freer is bludgeoned to death, and Rina can’t help but be drawn into the mystery. Mrs. Freer’s home was ransacked, but this was no ordinary burglary. Who knew the old lady kept a gun stashed under her pillow? And who wanted it badly enough to kill?

Detective Sebastian McGregor is called in to solve this baffling case. But with her neighbors’ safety at stake, Rina knows she needs to give him a helping hand.

This enchanting character-driven mystery was originally published as A Reason to Kill.

I really enjoyed this book. Storyline was engaging with a gripping plot that was well executed. I really liked all the characters and I will definitely be listening to the books as I’m intrigued to see how they develop. Narrative was excellent too, really captured the atmosphere and depicted the characters brilliantly.

Really good all round

I loved this book, the characters are idiosyncratic and well drawn, the murders are also well drawn. A great start to a promising series.

An excellent cosy mystery!

Murder by the sea is a solid but somewhat generic detective novel. It's easy to listen to and follow, the story is satisfying but it's not a book you're likely to remember in a year's time. The characters are all believable, shades of good, evil and in-between.
The narration is fine, although easy to drift off to, some of the voices are a bit extreme.
A perfectly good listen if you love British detective novels.
