About this listen

A strange death in the desert and Poirot might just be too late…

Amy Leatheran had never felt the lure of the mysterious East, but when she travels to an ancient site deep in the Iraqi desert to nurse the wife of a celebrated archaeologist, events prove stranger than she could ever have imagined. Her patient’s bizarre visions and nervous terror seem unfounded, but as the oppressive tension in the air thickens, events come to a terrible climax – in murder.

With one spot of blood as his only clue, Hercule Poirot must embark on a journey across the desert to unravel a mystery which taxes even his remarkable powers…

"Smooth, highly original, and completely absorbing." (New York Times)

This is a classic Agatha Christie story and, as such, it’s entertaining - though probably not one of her best. However, the real problem with this edition for me is the narration. Unfortunately, Anna Massey attempts various accents throughout and almost all of them are rather clumsy and difficult to listen to. Poirot’s accent especially is so ‘fake French/Belgian’ it’s painful, especially when one is used to Hugh Fraser’s or David Suchet’s skilful narration. I would heartily recommend actually reading this one rather than listening to the audio book.

Good Story. Awkward Narration.

Always love Anna Massey reading anything. It's a great story well read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Excellent

Although I have no issues of a woman reading these books like some other people do, I would say that the reader isn't great at acting and she'll either act in a way that is contrary to how it's written for instance shouting when the character is whispering as stated by Agatha Christie or she just doesn't hit the beat very well with emotions. but still worth a listen because the story is great.

Great story, mediocre reader

A wonderful story, but the narrator is incredibly jarring throughout, and the attempt at accents becomes all too much and off beat once Poirot comes into the fold.

Poor narration

The story is an old favourite but I found the narrator so jarring to listen to that I found it an actual struggle to listen through to the end of the audiobook. Her first person voice is pleasant and clear, but all her accents are dreadfully cartoonish (Poirot sounds quite German at times) and unfortunately this is a story containing many foreign characters.

Hard to listen to
