Top Gear turned gloomy Sunday nights into celebratory Friday nights. It made household names of presenters Clarkson, Hammond and May, their unique chemistry and buddy movie antics proving irresistible to a vast global audience. With these three at the helm, Top Gear earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular factual TV show on the planet.

Then, a short while later, it was all gone.

How did a thoroughly sensible little consumer advice programme on cars turn into a global phenomenon in the first place, though? How did it all go wrong? And how did they rise from the ashes as The Grand Tour, and go on to scale even greater heights?

One man has all the answers.

There from the beginning, Top Gear and The Grand Tour co-creator, and Jeremy’s oldest friend, Andy Wilman, opens the bonnet on over twenty years of motoring mayhem. In Mr Wilman’s Motoring Adventure, the mysterious man in the shadows tells the inside story of your favourite TV shows for the first time.

Irreverent, joyful and as laugh-out-loud funny as the shows themselves, it’s the best book about Top Gear and The Grand Tour . . . in the world.

I’ve loved top gear and the grand tour since I was a kid, it’s just brilliant to hear more about it, such a well written and narrated book. I only wish it was longer.

Fantastic, I didn’t want it to end.

A nostalgic trip of smile inducing proportions!!! It was great- a trip through life using TG/GT as way-points. But really, thank you. TV is not the same without you all.

As a 48yr old, Top Gear has been a huge part of my life, from the early days all the way up to the conclusion of the Grand Tour. I was even lucky enough to be in the audience during the cheap lorry challenge.

This book is a cracking story told by the ever amazing Mr. Wilman, a tale that has affected hundreds of millions of people over the years.

his candid storytelling is hilarious, you can fully imagine being there during some of the events he discusses too.

if you have any interest in cars, top gear, the amazing 4some that made up Clarkson, Hammond, May and Wilman, then you need to read or listen to this book.

what I will say is a huge thank you to Mr. Wilman for this book and an even bigger thank you to all of them for making life a little bit better every single time I sat down to watch their antics.

Wanting a break from my usual run of novels, I picked up Mr Wilman’s Motoring Adventure—and I’m glad I did. It’s a cracking read. Written in an engaging, chatty style, the book feels as though you’re sitting with the legendary Mr Wilman in a pub or by the fireside.

Wilman takes you briskly through his childhood (he admits that part doesn’t last long), then onto meeting Clarkson at school, the birth of Top Gear, and later The Grand Tour, right up to the wrap on their iconic final episode.

He recounts those early days, how he and Clarkson got Top Gear off the ground, and how they later launched The Grand Tour. Along the way, he digs deep into behind‑the‑scenes misadventures with the UK’s most beloved hapless trio.

Importantly, Wilman doesn’t sugar‑coat the bumps in the road. Hammond’s crashes, Clarkson’s infamous punch, and May’s run‑in with a wall during the “Scandi Flick” all get the full treatment. The chilling account of the Argentina “number plate gate” is particularly memorable.

Given the sheer number of years devoted to Top Gear, it naturally receives the most attention. Yet Wilman ensures The Grand Tour isn’t short‑changed, offering plenty of insight there too.

Highly recommended for fans of both shows.

The gospel according to Mr Wilman...bless him
