This is the first audiobook I have given up on, and having suffered through an entire W.S. Burroughs novel (brilliant in places, excruciating elsewhere), I rather think that that is saying something.

I am sure the narrator, Mr Cortes, is a perfectly decent actor, but I am afraid his talents do not lie in audio-books: to put it bluntly, his English accents are atrocious - wooden, Dick Van Dyke-style Cockney with a vague yet disconcerting Australian twang and dropped Ts in all the wrong places, as though the narrator has based his entire performance upon an American's idea of a homogenous "British accent" - extremely distracting.

He would have done better to read the whole thing straight, or preferably not at all. A great pity, as the short stories are, as usual for Sayers, excellent - hence two stars and not one.

Excellent book spoiled by narration.

Classic, ingenious stories by the real queen of detective fiction starring her most fascinating creation Lord Peter Wimsey made unlistenable by the worst narrative performance I have heard to date. Stilted strange and often mispronounced when reading descriptive passages, ludicrous when attempting dialogue and characterisation. The reader has obviously no feeling for the text and no knowledge of or respect for the body of work which places Dorothy L Sayers at the forefront of writers of the 20th century.

Appalling Narration
