About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Novel

A Wolf Priest is tasked by Ulrik the Slayer to recover an ancient relic of the Chapter – a chance for him to write his own legendary saga.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Ivar Krakenblood is a Space Wolves hero in the making. But first he must learn that those who seek glory in place of destiny – and an end worthy of the sagas – never find what they yearn for.

THE STORY

All sagas begin with blood.

Born upon the ice world of Fenris, Ivar Krakenblood has been raised to stand as one of its warrior sons, anointed to serve as a Wolf Priest. Life and death are his to give, and Ivar has proven his worth with deed and word. Still, the glory of true legend has always escaped him.

On a quest given to him by Ulrik the Slayer himself, Ivar seizes the chance to recover a lost relic of the Space Wolves Chapter and challenge the fates themselves. With a band of warriors, old comrades, and new allies, he sets out to forge his own path, one worthy of a son of Russ.

Yet those who strive to change their destiny must often pay a terrible price. There are forces that lurk in the darkness, seeking to sever him from his fate.

In the short story Price of Morkai, a Wolf Priest must deliver a fallen brother's geneseed back to the Space Wolves Chapter, while reflecting on his battle as a Blood Claw with the great Fenrisian beast responsible.

Like the title says, I actually had to stop listening, the narrator is truly bad, his voice is great, but it’s so slow I actually had to put it on 1.3x speed just to keep my interest. Like other reviewers have said it needs a rework

The difficulty with Space Wolves is the variety of accents and this can often affect the flow of the story.

Unfortunately the narrator for this book tried too hard, and his delivery was slow and as a result it meant the story had no real flow or impetus, which made it hard to follow when there was fight sequences as there was little to no urgency in the narration.

Otherwise the story isn't bad, and on reading it I quite enjoyed it, but I probably wont re-listen to the audio book whereas books like Lucas the Trickster I have listened to multiple times, and always enjoy the story as the narrator pulls you into the story.

I would suggest either a re-do with the narrator and the pace of the narration increased, especially around the fight sequences or this may have to be given to an alternative narrator otherwise it will go down as a book which can be read for enjoyment, but not listened to - which would be a shame.

good story ruined by narration

I really enjoyed this audio. Firstly, it’s very descriptive. The attention to detail, the variation of the descriptions and actions throughout were great. Marine books tend to be all action and superficial, it’s difficult to get across the nuance between characters when they’re all meant to be post-human super warriors. This book made a superb go of it and it landed well. It’s approaching NL territory for engagement and depth.

I next up I liked the character arc, it was fairly linear and there were a few times I wanted more from Ivar, as Brynjar felt more developed and I’d love to hear more of their saga in time.

The voice acting was spot on. I don’t have issue with the actors pronunciations and the variety in accenting was good. Enjoyed it!

In summary, the author employed a highly descriptive and expository style, crafting imagery with a level of detail rarely seen in modern Warhammer literature.

Great detailing and pace

As a scotsman, I appreciated the accent of the voice actor as it made the story more engaging however my only draw back (and also of other wolves books) is that the pronunciation of certain lore words like the Aett and Vylka Fenrika. It would just take stories to the next level of every actor done some homework before their readings. Apart from that minor nag - excellent book and excellent performance. a worthy 40k SW book
