King of Duels marks the passing of the torch from our beloved Andrea Parsneau to a new narrator. Erin Bennett, a Golden Voice narrator, will continue to bring the magic of The Wandering Inn to life.

The world is full of adventures, big and small.

From exploring the [Garden of Sanctuary] to the depths of the sea, there are countless fascinating discoveries to be made. Not just in the places people go, but in the things they create... or recreate from Earth. Chocolate, lifting weights, and alcohol all flow through The Wandering Inn with unexpected consequences at times.

However, there's also war, [Assassins], and scams that ruin or destroy lives. For every monster, there is an adventurer. The Stitch Witch may creep forward, and the King of Destruction continues his rampage across nations, but there will always be a champion who steps forward.

Featuring a foreword from Andrea Parsneau.

I tried to give the new narrator a chance but unfortunately the rich atmosphere the previous narrator created, even in the quieter moments, is missing. I find myself losing interest and stopping because I just don’t enjoy it anymore. I also really miss the variety of voices the previous narrator used. With the new one, it’s easy to tell it’s the same person doing all the characters, which was never the case before.

Missing the Magic of the Previous Narrator

While the narrator’s voice and pronunciation are not abrasive, I have become endeared to the characters and their established traits and accents. I was disappointed that there is no differentiation between the voices of say Erin and Lyonette, Pisces and Serriah, or Pelt. The only characters you could say stand out are the antinnium and drakes solely because they exaggerate their S’s or talk in staccato. Overall the story is at its usual great standard and I would probably enjoy it even more if read differently.

Narration Destroys my love of this tale

Its just not the same - we have all built a relationship with every character and there are a fair few characters across all of these books, changing the narrator has lost a lot of the nuances and cadence across the storylines. This might be my last book in the wandering in series.

Why change the narrator after 15 books!

I've bought into this series and have enjoyed most of the characters.

I listened to the whole audiobook for the new narrator hoping the change would grow on me. It hasn't though. I could get past the changes to how I expected the different characters to sound. What I have been unable to get past is the poor UK&I accents and the boredom that regularly comes through in the narration.

Normally I'd be looking forward to the next book. Instead I'm looking for something else.

The narrator change is not for me

I have loved The Wandering Inn since Erin first wandered into the dragons lair on the way to her bathroom but, this latest episode left me thinking “meh” at best and disturbed at worst (yes I’m talking about that now infamous chapter). The first chapter, the actual King of Duels scene was good but then That Chapter!! I had to skip it after a while and after that I lost the magic found within the Inn, chapters flew by without engaging me until I gave up.
The new narrator sorry to say was no Andrea Parsneau, she tried her best I’m sure, but fell short , characters I knew and loved sounded completely different, Erin herself lost her “perkiness” , others blurred into meaningless words, all sounding the same despite being different species.
Enough I say, I’ll be leaving the Inn for now & might not be back.
Sorry Pirateaba not a good book
